"Decent but I found at least one movie it won't play until a firmware update" 2009-07-11
By D. Stewart (Grand Rapids, MI USA)
Bedtime Stories (Plus Standard DVD + Digital Copy + BD Live) [Blu-ray]I've owned this unit for a few months now and it works like it should however I contacted Philips to make aware that the newer release from Disney "Bedtime Stories" will not play the main feature. It gets though the previews but when it starts to load the main feature it sets back to the white screen with PHILIPS in blue screen and repeats the previews. I have the latest firmware update so I'll just have to wait...

Other than that it plays the rest of my collection just fine. I'm very happy with this purchase and understand that their are mishaps like this and thankfully they make firmware updates to address issues like this and the changes to certain formats in blu ray discs. The player takes it loner to load the movies than I'd like but I'm totally aware that there is alot of info on these blur ray discs to process and the clarity is worth the wait. It seems to load longer when you have company over and your both staring at the screen waiting for the movie to begin but really not a big deal. All in all great player. It's quiet when it runs so no distractions or, "what's that loud humming noise" coming from it.

"This one is a keeper." 2009-04-10
By DeeBee (Boise, ID)
This has been a great machine after 11 months of use. It has been reliable and has played all of my titles without glitches. It bitstreams Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HDMA to my Onkyo audio reciever. I was and am still very pleasantly surprised by this machine. Kudos to Philips.

 "Excellent Bluray Player" 2009-02-17
By BUFFER (Spooner, WI United States)
I am like another reviewer who feels like I have to defend this product. Almost could not believe it when I saw the average review of only three stars as I write this. Did a lot of homework before buying this and when I saw it on sale for just under $200.00 at a competitor of Amazon.com, I had to pull the trigger. I am very glad I did, because the very minor flaws I have encountered thus far (after three weeks of ownership) seem insignificant to me.

Don't compare a player in this price range to one that has double the retail price. To me that is unfair.

I am a guy who has a decent Dolby Digital 5.1 sound system. I don't care if this does not have the latest Dolby TruHD or DTS HD decoders built in, because I am not going to take the plunge into a new AV Reciever thank you. The 5.1 sounds excellent via the optical input. I have a feeling that Philips knows who they are building these things for.

As for Picture quality, I could not be happier. I have it hooked up via HDMI (with the audio off so I can send that via Optical) to a Panasonic 42" Viera plasma (which accepts 1080P24 signal). Blurays look absolutely stunning if you have a TV that can accept 1080P24, and I have not had any of the freeze issues that some others talk about after viewing approximately a dozen bluray titles so far. DVD's look excellent as well (maybe not as good as Oppo), but MUCH better than my previous Samsung DVD player ever produced. Another selling point to me is the fact that it plays all DVD formats. Not just the minus only, some others in this price range. If you have any family stuff, home movies, etc recorded on Plus format dvds, watch out. You might end up not being able to watch them on your new player.

Lastly, If you look at some "big time" reviewers like CNET for example, you may be wrongly swayed against buying something that is not at the absolute top of their list. That would be a shame. I think they got it wrong when they gave this one an average rating.

I really like mine a lot, and I can't imagine that most people would not feel the same way if they picked one up.

having read the negative reviews i felt i had to defend the philips bdp7200 ive had this player for 5 months and have not endured any problems so far! maybe i lucked up on getting one that actual does work but this player plays beautiful blurays, is very quiet, and has played every bluray i have put in it over 50 so far including the new releases without stopping or having to go through the hazzle of upgrading firmware like i have had to do downstairs with the samsung1500 i highly recommend this player!

 "Disappointing" 2009-01-24
By G. Schwarz (NJ USA)
This is good priced blue ray player. I did my research and this unit was rated one of the best buys by Consumer Reports. Got it, hooked it up, and it played the first movie for about an hour then locked up. Took me a while to get my disk out but I finally did. I called Philips and they had great customer service. Very short wait on the phone (especially for a Saturday). They told me they would replace the unit. It took about a week and a half and a new unit arrived. This unit has been working fine for the past 3 weeks. Now here comes the Disappointing part. They replaced my New unit with a refurbished unit. And the refurbushed unit only has a 90 day Warrantee not the 1 year of the new unit. If I had to make another purchase I would purchase another brand.

Shame on you Philips !!!!!

"Plays many kinds of files, but not DVD's" 2010-01-09
By B. McQuinn
I can confirm this will not play region 1 encoded DVD's from the USA. Supersonic has not responded to my email about this. It does play burned DVD+R, SVCD and some AVI files ok. I have had little luck getting it to play any common MP4 formats. It does work with a portable USB hard drive and SD card, but is difficult to find files on a disc with many file folders and files. It doesn't find them all, and only shows 8 characters of the file name.

I got it for the VGA output and portability to use with my AAXA p2 projector. I assumed VGA would provide better picture quality than A/V output. Theoretically yes, but the VGA connection is poor and suffers from a lot of electrical interference from the unit itself. Wavy electrical lines and static while playing a disc destroy the overall picture quality. The interference doesn't seem to be as noticeable with the A/V output. It's not the cable (tried more than one) it is from the unit. Switching from VGA to RCA is done manually and has to be done through a menu on screen.

Obviously built for a low price and not quality, the plastic feels cheap so I'll be careful packing it for travel. LED display on front edge shows elapsed time, etc. and is useful.

If you're looking for a basic portable DVD player, this is not it. If you want a MP4 player, there are smaller ones to choose from with flash memory. If you want to play your own SVCD's, DVD+r's, MP3, or MPEG files from disc or USB, then this will do the trick for a good price. Even just for viewing pictures from your memory card on your TV it works. I will find uses for it regardless of its misrepresented feature set (DVD compatibility)

"Regions and video formats that can be played" 2009-11-11
By Surfer Rob (Sunny California)
I did not purchase this player from Amazon, but I did get it off of Ebay. If you want to use the USB or SD inputs the video format that works the best is SVCD, the AVI formats mostly did not work with various codecs. Also, regular VCD format worked, but you could not skip through different chapters.

The unit is very light and the power supply or wall wart is a modern "switching" type like a cell phone charger. It has played all of my burned DVD+R discs without any skipping or freezing.

Funny thing though, the unit is supposed to be set to REGION 1 or USA, but it will not play any rented or purchased DVD discs. But will play a burned image of the same disc.

If anyone knows any Supersonic region codes, please help.

"Great Price for a top quality Blu Ray player" 2010-01-07
By Bruce E. Roberts (California)
I was leary of low prices on Blu Ray players but I noticed that all brands were starting to come down in price. When I saw this Sony BD player with BD Live for $139.95 I just went ahead and ordered it. Sony is a well known brand and a TV I used to have lasted over 30 years without ever having a service call of any kind. I hope this one lasts half that long. It is simple to use, easy to understand and easy to connect to the Cable Modem to update firmware. The Picture Quality on my new Flat Screen HD TV is amazing. I am very pleased with the player and the quickness in which it got here.

 "Sony Blu Ray" 2010-01-07

Bought three for Christmas gifts. The set-up is easy, the picture is all I wanted and the sound quality is great. For people who do not have the "technology gene", it is a snap to install as the machine does all the work. Plug into the TV and plug into the wall outlet and you are done. I do recommend the use of an HDMI cable that does not come with the player.

"Good basic player, good video, no streaming" 2010-01-04
By J. Aguilar (Colorado)
Executive Summary:

o The Good

o Cheap

o Blu Ray video quality on par with others in this price class

o audio quality also on par

o The Bad

o No streaming support (netflix, pandora, amazon, etc)

o component/video-out quality is unacceptable (should not affect many people)

o DVD upconverting not as good as others

Compared to Panasonic BD60

= BluRay video quality

= Audio quality

- Sony DVD upconverting not as good

+ Menus and interface are a little easier on the Sony

= Same Price

- No streaming on the Sony

+ Sony has an "audio priority" setting (see below)

I bought this player just before Christmas and I did not have an HDMI cable, since I didn't want to pay the ridiculous Best Buy price for one. So while I waited for a cable to be shipped, I hooked it up via component output and the picture was completely unacceptable. It was worse than a 10-year old VHS tape! I don't think this will affect many people, but not everybody has a new TV with HDMI inputs.

One thing that was nice with the Sony were the setup menus and even the BluRay video menus for playback were a little nicer than the Panasonic (which I also own). One feature that I really liked on the Sony was the "audio proirity" setting. I don't have a receiver with HDMI switching, so I had to hook up the audio to the reciever via optical cable (TosLink). The TV gets the HDMI output. But with the receiver on, you don't want sound coming out of the TV speakers. So the Sony has this audio priority setting for just this situation. With the receiver on, it does not output sound to the HDMI (TV). With the receiver off, it DOES output sound to the HDMI. The Panasonic does not have this setting, so when I pay a bluRay disc with the receiver on, I have to turn down the volume on the TV or mute it. A minor inconvenience, but a nice feature for the Sony.

The DVD upscaling of the Sony is not quite as good as the Panasonic. It is, however, as good or better than my old DVD player, so this is really a minor issue.

As you probably already know, the Sony does nut *currently* support any streaming media like Netflix, Amazon video , Pandora, etc. The buy at Best Buy told me Sony would be updating the firmware shortly to include some support, but you know about those "guys at Best Buy".... They are not generally knowledgable and are known to make stuff up on the spot.

"Stopped playing Bluray discs after firmware update" 2010-01-03

The unit worked fine for 13 months (12 month warranty of course). I decided to upgrade to firmware v20 to maybe get some additional features/functionality. Now when I put in a Blueray disc, the player says "unknown". I spent 2 hrs on the phone with Sony to no avail. Now I have an overpriced DVD only player!

Sony just lost a loyal customer.

Sony BDP-S350 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player is a good and also expensive device when I bought it three months ago. However, Sony is blocking to upgrade it with netflix movie streaming which is a popular thing now days to force people to buy the Sony BDP-S460 Blu-ray Disc Player which does that.

I think Sony should be more loyal to their customers and provide this upgrade to the 350 version since we bought at an expensive price when it came out.

 "No Problems" 2009-12-21
By C. Deiter (earth)
my tv is only 720p and with this player and a blu-ray movie the picture is great! if you have a 1080 tv- then the picture should even be better. but, whether its 720 or 1080 you will be happy with this player. and if you notice-the front is clean! (not a bunch of buttons n curves) and thats the way i like it! just clean n smooth.

ive used it with a 37inch lg lcd a 55 inch projection hatachi and a element 32 inch lcd.

nice picture with all of them (lg being the best) it also plays reg dvds and music cds.

and of course you can hook it to internet and enjoy blu-ray movie trivia etc-- plus it updates firmware if needed.

the only thing that would be a great idea, would be for it to have wifi!!!!!! I dont have the internet hooked to it now because I dont like wires running all over my house. so wifi would be great!

and for those who dont like the higher price tag of blu-ray movies---you can find good deals online! plus most blu-ray now come with digital copies also!! which i love! i put them on my ipod touch! and on my laptop! movies on the go----:)
